- Scope and ContentWilliam Bluffield: Ellwood had been working on a road for him about 5 o’clock told him he had lost his shovel. He rode to Thomas Waldock’s house at Hatley and asked him for the shovel he had taken from Ellwood. At first Waldock said he knew nothing about it but he then told his wife to go upstairs and fetch the shovel. She did so and he took the shovel away. William Ellwood: on 28 September he was at worked with his shovel at the side of the road in Bedford. At dinner time he left his shovel to the side of the road. On returning he found his shovel gone. He had worked with it for 3 or 4 days and knew it to by a mark on its handle. Statement of the accused: he saw it [the shovel] lying on the side of the road and he picked it up and took it home and told his mistress to keep it until someone called for it.
