- Scope and ContentGeorge Ellerd of Luton, plumber and glazier - he was in Park Street Luton with Mr William Clarke on Friday evening when the boy James Francis told Mr Clarke that a man had picked his pocket. He saw Mr Clarke collar Hayes and throw him down. In falling down a silk handkerchief fell from some part of Hayes’ person. He picked it up and gave it Mr Clarke. William Clarke of Luton, innholder - he was standing opposite Mr Chase’s in Park Street. James Francis touched him and said a man had picked his pocket. He found he had lost a silk handkerchief. Francis pointed out the prisoner. He seized Hayes and threw him down. After Hayes got up, Mr Ellerd gave him his handkerchief. James Francis of Luton, labourer - on Friday evening after dark he was standing near a booth in Park Street and saw the prisoner put his hand into Mr Clarke’s right hand coat pocket and draw out something like a handkerchief. He told Mr Clarke a man had been picking his pocket. Another man with the prisoner tried Mr Clarke’s left hand pocket. Mr Clarke found he had lost his handkerchief. He pointed out the man to Mr Clarke.
