    William Smith of Potton, ironmonger - having received some information he followed Brittain into the shambles in the market place and charged him with stealing a reaping hook. Brittain denied this. Hearing that Brittain had been seen coming out of some hog pens down an alley by the by the side of his house, he went and searched. Under the dirt and straw in one of the sties he found the hook now produced, which he knows by the mark to be his property. The hooks were exposed for sale on a chain in front of his shop at Potton. The hook is worth one shilling. Zachariah Apthorpe of Potton - he saw Brittain about 10am that morning take a reaping hook fro Mr Smith’s shop. Brittain ran down the alley towards the hog pens with it. He told Mr Smith directly.
