    This Indenture witnesseth that John Gardner born in and having a settlement in the Parish of Salford in the County of Bedford by and with consent of Richard Curtis Folliott Scott vicar of the Parish of Salford aforesaid and of and Barnard Chernocke Sturges and Samuel Charles Denton Churchwardens and the said Samuel Charles Denton and William Summerford Overseers of the Poor of the same parish (testified by their severally executing these presents) doth put himself apprentice to John Hill & Sons of Fenny Stratford, County of Buckingham, bootmakers to learn their art or trade and with them after the manner of an Apprentice to serve from the 22nd day of May one thousand nine hundred and five for the term of one year thence next ensuing during which term the said Apprentice his Masters faithfully and diligently shall serve in the said art or trade of bootmaker and in all lawful concerns according to the best of his power skill and ability and behave himself towards his said Masters and all theirs honestly orderly and obediently in all things. And in consideration of such faithful service and of the sum of Ten Pounds sterling to be paid to the said John Hill & Sons by the said Vicar Churchwardens and Overseers of the said Parish of Salford in manner following that is to say the sum of Five Pounds on the execution of these presents and the sum of Five Pounds on the 22nd day of November one thousand nine hundred and five if the said Apprentice shall then be living and in the service of the said John Hill & Sons. The receipt of which first mentioned sum of Five Pounds is hereby acknowledged (which said sum of Ten Pounds is part of certain Charity moneys charged in lands in the parish of Brightwell by the Will of Dr Woodward and payable to the Vicar Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Salford aforesaid for the placing out of Poor Children born in the Parish of Salford Apprentices). They the said John Hill & Sons doth hereby accept and take the said John Gardner as their apprentice in the said art or trade of a bootmaker which they useth and by the best means that they can shall and will teach and instruct the or cause to be taught or instructed the said John Gardner. ‘see rider’ Two separate notes: John Gardner, native of Salford, now living in Woburn Sands of full age to be apprenticed to Messrs John Hill & Sons, bootmakers, Fenny Stratford for one year from May 22nd 1905. Premium £10 in two instalments (half now and remainder in six months). Wages 5/- a week for first six months 10/- a week for last six months. Hours of work 6am to 5.30 pm with 1 hour and 45 minutes for meals. Messrs Hill to find all necessary tools lighting etc. Gardner shall not afterwards start in business within three miles of Messrs Hill.
