- Scope and ContentThis Indenture witnesseth that Charles Hall a poor child born in and having a settlement in the Parish of Salford in the County of Bedford and an orphan by and with consent of the Reverend Edward Orlebar Smith vicar of the Parish of Salford aforesaid and of James Morris Churchwarden and Henry Sturges and Richard Webb Thorogood Overseers of the Poor of the same parish (testified by their severally being parties to and sealing and delivering these presents) doth put himself apprentice to James Richardson of Cranfield in the County of Bedford, baker to learn his art and with him after the manner of an Apprentice to serve from the third day of December last past for the term of Seven Years or until he the said Apprentice shall attain the age of twenty one years during all which time the said Apprentice shall faithfully serve his said Master in all lawful businesses according to his power skill and ability and behave himself towards his said Master and all his honestly orderly and obediently in all things . And the said James Richardson in consideration of the sum of Twenty Pounds sterling to be paid by the said Vicar Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Salford in manner following that is to say the sum of Ten Pounds on the execution of these presents and the sum of Ten Pounds when the said Apprenticeship shall have half expired which will be in the month of June in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty the receipt of which first mentioned sum of Ten Pounds is hereby acknowledged (which said sum of Twenty Pounds is part of certain Charity moneys charged in lands in the parish of Brightwell by the Will of Dr Woodward and payable to the Vicar Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Salford aforesaid for the binding out of Poor Children born in the Parish of Salford Apprentices). The said James Richardson by the best means that he can shall and will teach and instruct the said Apprentice or cause to be taught or instructed in the art and business of a baker and shall and will find for his said Apprentice good and sufficient meat drink clothes lodging washing medicine and all other necessaries during the said term. And at the expiration of the said term shall and will find and provide for his said Apprentice in addition to the clothing he may then have one new coat, one new waistcoat, one new pair of trousers and one new pair of shoes of the quality and description most usually worn by persons of that trade and of the class of life of the said Apprentice. And it is hereby declared and agreed by or between all the said parties of these presents that if the said Apprentice shall not be living or shall not continue in the service of the said James Richardson as such apprentice until the month of June one thousand eight hundred and sixty when the second moiety of the Premium will become payable as hereinbefore mentioned that then that such second moiety shall not be paid and the said James Richardson shall not have any claim in respect thereof. And for the true performance of all the Covenants and Agreements aforesaid the said James Richardson bindeth himself unto the Vicar Churchwarden and Overseers and their successors respectively by these presents. In Witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the twenty third day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven.
