- Scope and ContentGeorge Harris: on 21 December he sent his son out with the bread at about 2pm. His son returned about 5pm and in consequence of what he communicated to him he checked the account and found there to be a 2 loaves deficit. He went with PC Bedlow to Hail Weston and the house at which the prisoner lodged. Bedlow told the prisoner he was charged with taking 2 loaves from the cart. The prisoner’s sister produced 3 loaves and he recognized 2 of them as his property. The sister said that the prisoner had brought home the loaves that night. The prisoner lodged bout 2 miles from his house. The prisoner said he had scrambled for the loaves at St Neots. George Gilbert: a blacksmith at Hail Weston. He had been going up Parsons Hill, a road in Eaton, on 21 December about 3pm. He saw Mr Harris’s cart stopped at Mr Butler’ gate. George Harris the younger was in charge of the cart. Harris left the cart in the road and went to Mr Butler’s house. The prisoner was with the cart. When Harris went into Butlers, the prisoner went behind the cart and took some bread. The prisoner ran down the hill as fast as he could with the bread. PC William Bedlow: he went to the prisoner’s lodgings in hail Weston and charged him with stealing the bread. He asked the prisoner where he had the bread from and the prisoner said he had scrambled for them at St Neots. George Harris the younger: he took his father’s cart with bread on the 21 December and he stopped at Mr Butler’s house. He went in the house for about 5 minutes. When he came out he missed 2 loaves. He had seen the prisoner pass his cart when he went into Mr Butlers. The prisoner had passed the cart about half a mile from Mr Butlers. He saw Crow, Gilbert and a boy in a cart on the road and no one else.
