- Scope and ContentElizabeth Janes: wife of George the keeper of the Wheel Plough public house in Luton. On 19 October she hung her husband’s top coat out in the yard to dry. About 4pm she took the coat in and hung it up in the kitchen. That was the last time she saw the coat. Kingham was about the premises all day. Richard Panter: he was a marine store dealer who also dealt in clothes. On 19 October, Kingham came to his shop with a great coat and asked him to buy it. He asked what Kingham wanted for it and who had sent him. The prisoner said he had been sent by his mother and Panter sent him to ask his mother what she wanted for it. Kingham came back and said 4 shillings. Panter told him to go back to his mother and say he would pay 3 shilling 6 pence. He gave him 3s 6d and he left the coat. The following evening he went to Janes’ house and offered the coat for sale. Mr Janes looked at it and identified if as his property. He left the coat with Mr Janes. He afterwards went with a police constable to Chalkhouse Street and identified Kingham as the boy who sold him the coat. George Janes: keeper of the Wheel Plough public house. On 20 October Panter came to his house and offered a top coat for sale. The coat was his property and he had not missed it until it was brought to him. He gave £1 18s for it in March and it was now worth £1 10s. PC John Lambert: he took Kingham into custody and charged him with stealing a coat. Kingham said he had not stolen a coat. Statement of the accused: he had not stolen it. Another boy asked him to sell it for him and he sold it to Panter for 3s 6d. He gave the other boy the money and he was given 3d for selling it.
