- Scope and ContentAlfred Burnham of Potton, grocer - on Saturday 22 April in his warehouse in the yard at the back of his house he had a bag of over one cwt of currants. The door was not locked and anyone might get in from the yard. William Bentley of Potton, labourer - he works for Mr Franklin whose yard adjoins Mr Burnham’s. On Saturday about 5pm he was cleaning knives in the yard and saw Taylor come into the yard. He asked what he was doing there. Taylor did not answer and left. Less than 2 minutes later he came in again and went into Burnham’s warehouse. He could see him at the bag of currants. Taylor took 2 or 3 handfuls and put them into his breeches pocket. As soon as Taylor saw him he came out. A lad who was with him told Burnham’s family about it. William Taylor - “I only had a handful”.
