  • Scope and Content
Mary Larkins of the Kingdom of Ireland, single woman – she was going to London and stopped at Dunstable on Saturday nights. She slept at a lodging house and shared a bed with Brooks. There were others sleeping in the same room. Brooks came with her from Manchester. In the morning she saw Brooks take her bundle out of the room and followed her. There was a gown, an apron, a pair of stockings, a Bible, and some other things in the bundle, and a bonnet and shawl. When she got downstairs she could not see Brooks. Yesterday evening the policeman showed her the bundle, the bonnet and the shawl. The items are all hers. James Andrews of Dunstable, labourer – he heard about the robbery, ran after Brooks and caught her near Leagrave Marsh. She had a bundle with her and was sitting under the hedge. When he got over the hedge she said “I am the girl that stole the things and these be them”. He took the bundle and told her she must go with him to a policeman. She asked him to let her go. He took her to PC Millard at Leagrave. John Millard of Luton, police constable – yesterday morning about 12 o’clock he was at Leagrave and saw Brooks with Andrews in the Royal Oak public house. She had a bundle which she admitted she had stolen from a woman at Dunstable that morning, and said the bonnet and shawl she was wearing were stolen from the same woman. He took her to Dunstable and Mary Larkins identified them as hers. Brooks said she was driven to it by misfortune. Catherine Brooks – nothing to say.
