  • Scope and Content
Sarah Sykes: on 29 July he was out at harvest at Mr Jefferies. She had locked up her house and fastened her windows. She had left some bread in the house and some uncooked and salted pork. When she returned home she found a brick window had been opened and on looking around missed a loaf of bread, some pork and a little cheese. She went to Mrs Green’s house, about 200 yards away. She went there in consequence of being told that the children had been near her house but they denied it. There was a little bit of bread on the table which they said had been given to them. A pane of glass had been broken in the back window and the window left open. Mary Ann Hilson: she recollected walking across the close at the back of Mr Sykes house and saw the 2 prisoners. The little one was sitting behind the fence and the other was coming from their own cottage. The elder took something from the little girl and put it in her pocket. She was 20 yards from them when they saw her. When she left they were picking something off the ground. PC John King: he saw the prisoners in custody and asked them what they had been doing. The little girl said it was her sister, Louisa that had got into the house and Betty El[?]. She said they had taken the loaf and meat and had it for their dinner. That was her sister Louisa, Betty El[?] and her younger brothers. She had only had a little of the head. Louisa said that the eldest sister had sent them and the little one had got into the house and stolen the meat. They had part of it for dinner and that loaf and remainder of the meat was hidden under a blanket. Statements of the accused: nothing to say.
