Ann Carter: wife of Moses Carter of the High Street, Dunstable. On Tuesday 16 August the 2 prisoner came to the house and lived in a furnished room. They remained at the lodging until 20 August. She saw the male prisoner leave the house between 4pm and 5pm and the female prisoner left between 7pm and 8pm. About 2 hours later, in consequence of them not returning to the house, she went into the room the prisoners had occupied and missed a spoon, a fork and a table cloth. On Sunday PC Cuttriss showed her a table cloth, spoon and fork which she identified as her husbands property. PC Jeremiah Cuttriss: he went early on 21 August in pursuit of the prisoners and found them at the Five Horse Shoes public house in Market Street. He went up to their bedroom and asked the male prisoner for the bundle they had taken there on Saturday night. The prisoner said he knew nothing of it. The landlady gave him a bundle which he opened in the presence of the prisoners and found a table cloth, spoon and fork. The items were identified by Mrs Carter. Statement of the accused: John Taylor - he was not sure they were in the bundle. Harriet Wright – nothing to say.
