    Joseph Smith Cook - he is master of Woburn Union workhouse. Gobby is a settled inhabitant of Toddington in the Woburn Union. On 20 July Gobby’s wife and child (a boy aged 4) came to the workhouse with an order of admission They appeared to be quite destitute and suffering from want. He ascertained that Gobby had left them 3 weeks before, that nothing had been heard of him and that they were left quite unprovided for. Gobby was able to work, and on searching for him under a warrant he found he had been at work at Totteridge. Gobby has been convicted of deserting his family several times and he is directed by the Board of Guardians to apply for his commitment as an incorrigible rogue. He produces a certified copy of Gobby’s conviction as a rogue and vagabond on 1 July 1846. He gave the evidence on which Gobby was convicted.
