- Scope and ContentDavid Tearle of Houghton Regis - abut 3 weeks ago he lost a shovel from his back premises at Houghton Regis. On 3 January he heard William Sanders had offered one for sale. He gave information to PC Sharp. On 4 January he went with PC Sharp to Sanders’ house and Sharp brought him a shovel which he swears is the one he lost. William Sanders - he knew the shovel was in the barn but he did not steal it, he borrowed it from Mrs Tearle. Cornelius Sharpe of Houghton Regis, police constable - on 3 January he received information from Mr Tearle that he had lost a shovel and had heard Sanders had offered one for sale. He found that the shovel was hidden in a barn occupied by Sanders and a man named Scrivener. On 4 January he went into the barn with Tearle. Sanders denied all knowledge of the shovel. He told Sanders he knew he had offered the shovel for sale the previous day. Sanders began to cry and said the shovel was there and he knew it belonged to Tearle. He found the shovel in the barn and Tearle identified it.
