Depositions and examinations - John Young and John Crane

William Ball of Bletsoe, coachman – he bought a quantity of apples growing in William King’s orchard at Bletsoe and employed Young to gather them. Crane was with Young when he was gathering them. They were put in a barn belonging to William King at Bletsoe. He missed some of them more than once and set John King to watch them on 6 October. John King of Bletsoe, labourer – on Wednesday 6 October he went at about 5.30pm to watch Mr Ball’s apples. He hid himself under some straw in the barn. Soon afterwards Young and Crane came into the barn and he saw Young take a quantity of apples from a heap and put them into Crane’s pocket. Young told Crane to take them to his (Young’s) mother. As they were leaving he got up and spoke to them. They did not return the apples. The apples were worth 3d. John Young and John Crane – both admitted the apples were taken out of a box in the barn. Crane said that he took none but that Young had put them into his pocket.
