  • Scope and Content
Note: these bills had at one time been on a receipt spike, from which they had subsequently been removed and tied with string in loose bundles. One or two bundles appear to be missing, for in most cases a gap will be found from 1819 to 1822. Moreover it cannot be considered certain that the file is complete even from 1815 to 1819 and from 1822 to 1829, for it is very probable that some small loose bills had escaped from the bundles. However a reference to the files of Grindon the grocer or Eyles the butcher will show that there is a surprising degree of completeness. The method of arrangement has been to group certain related subjects together, and for each subject to put together the bills of a particular tradesman. where these are numerous, the tradesman has been given a separate catalogue entry; in other cases the tradesmen are usually arranged in alphabetical order, with miscellaneous ones at the end: thus the file for millinery shows bills from Lock & Lincoln, Stonebanks, and Wells, and some miscellaneous bills. It must not be considered that the grouping is exhaustive. In particular the miscellaneous section (e.g. Pickering, GA88, who also supplies oranges) should be noted. See also X25, especially X25/36.
