[Calendar or Prisoners (QSR1847/4/3/1) - Samuel Upton is prisoner number 7 in the House of Correction, convicted of being an incorrigible rogue after two previous convictions for the same offence. He is to be kept to hard labour until the Quarter Sessions when he is to be further dealt with according to law. A pencil annotation states "no jurisdiction".]

    Thomas Dawson, Master of the Ampthill Union Workhouse - on 28 April 1847 Sarah Upton, wife of Samuel Upton was admitted as destitute with her 5 children: Mary Ann (age 10) Sophia (age 8) Charles (age 6) Harriet (age 2) Alfred (age 1) Since that time they have been chargeable to the parish of Shillington. He produces the order of the Board of Guardians for the apprehension of Upton. Sarah Upton stated on coming to the house that she did so as a consequence of her husband deserting her. Samuel Upton - what Mr Dawson says is quite true. He has been convicted of the same offence twice before.
