- Scope and ContentDaniel Brown of Houghton Regis, labourer - he has been lodging at the house of Elizabeth Ellingham in the parish of Houghton Regis. On 23 August he left his watch lying in his bedroom at her house. When he returned from work in the evening it was gone. The next day he questioned Ellingham about it and she was very unwilling to tell him anything. In the end she said she had taken it to Luton and given it to Lewis in the magistrate’s room to raise money to get a man named Jerry free. On Tuesday 28 August he went to Mark Lewis’ shop at Dunstable with his brother David Brown. Lewis said he had a watch Elizabeth Ellingham had given him in the Justice Room at Luton, but would not show it to him and would not part with it until the parties who gave him the watch brought him the money he had advanced on it. David Brown of Dunstable, grocer – on 28 August his brother Daniel Brown told him he had lost his watch. He went to Mrs Ellingham’s and said to her “how came you to steal my brother’s watch?” She said “I did not steal it”. She said she took it out of his bedroom, took it to Luton and gave it to Lewis to obtain some money to get Jerry free, or words to that effect. He went with his brother to Lewis for the watch that evening, but Lewis would not show them the watch or part with it until he had the money he advanced on it. Mark Lewis of Dunstable, clothier – on 23 August he was at the Magistrate’s Room at Luton. A man named Jerry was going to be committed for assault. He agreed to lend him some money to pay the fine, £1 2s, if he would give sufficient security. Jerry offered him his clothes which he said were not sufficient. Elizabeth Ellingham said Jerry should not go to Gaol and gave him the watch. Charles Maffey of Dunstable, police constable – on 3 September he received a warrant to apprehend Ellingham. He did so and called on Mark Lewis who gave him the watch now produced. Daniel Brown identified it as his property.
