- Scope and ContentThe Visiting Justices have regularly visited and inspected the prison during the Quarter of the year ending 25th December last. Isaac Bird the trades instructor has resigned his office; he has been in the service of the prison since February 1855, the Visiting Justices hereby testify that his conduct has been good and recommend that a grant be made to him by way of superannuation allowance of an annuity of £74.10.5 being a sum equal to two thirds of his salary. He is 62 years of age and completely broken down in health. The Visiting Justices have appointed warder Hewitt who hitherto has superintended the shoemaking department to superintend the whole of the industrial department. The Visiting Justices will take mmediate steps to appoint a temporary warder in the place of Bird at a salary of £1 per week.
