- Scope and ContentWilliam Manning of Blunham, labourer – he occupies a cottage at Blunham. He left his wife there about 2pm yesterday and when he returned was told some sugar and some pork had been stolen by Catherine Emery. Jemima Manning, wife of William Manning – she left her house yesterday about 2.30pm. Catherine Emery stood at her gate about 3 yards away. She put her key underneath a brick after locking the door. She told Emery she was going to Girtford. She was absent until 6.30. When she returned she was informed that Emery had been into her house. She missed a quantity of pork from her pork pot and ½ lb of sugar, done up just as it came from the shop. She left her pork pot covered with a cloth, then a board with some broccoli on the board, and then a cloth over the whole. When she returned these were displaced. Eliza Daniels, daughter of Joseph Daniels of Blunham, spinster – she saw Emery go into Mannings’ house about 3pm. She did not know Mrs Manning ws not at home. She did not see Emery come out. She had no suspicion about her intentions in going into the house. A few minutes after she came out of Mrs Mannings she saw Emery go to Mrs Brockets next door. Harriet Thomas of Blunham, married woman – she was sitting t her window yesterday about 3.30 and saw Emery go into Mrs Manning’s gate and come out about 4 minutes later from the next door neighbour’s front door. She went to Mrs Brocket who was the next door neighbour and remarked to her how strange it was that Emery should return to Mrs Manning’s when she knew she must be away from home. She had heard that Mrs Manning was going to Girtford. She was at home all afternoon and did not see anyone else go through Mrs Manning’s gate or to her door. Rebecca Brocket of Blunham, married woman – she lives next door to mrs Manning. Emery came to her house at about 3.45pm last Thursday and went out of the front door. Emery came without having any business with her. She had never been in her house before. Emery is not a person she is in the habit of speaking to and she was quite surprised to see her and that she did not enquire for Mrs Manning. Emery sat down a few minutes in the house. She went into the garden with her little girl. Her front door is next to the street. She saw nothing in Emery’s hands or about her. Emery had her baby with her as she now has. She told Mrs Manning that Emery had been to her back door. Catherine Emery – she did go to Mrs Brocket’s door, but did not go into Mrs Manning’s.
