Depositions - Lethe Wagstaffe

Alice Cawcutt, wife of William Cawcutt of Lower Gravenhurst, labourer – yesterday 25 June she washed a cotton gown and hung it on some faggots next to the road at the house where she lives at about 3pm. At 5pm she missed it. She saw Lethe Wagstaffe go to her neighbours house begging about 4pm. When she missed the gown she went to Shefford after the prisoner and went to the house where she lived. She accused Wagstaffe of having her gown, which she denied. She has examined the gown now produced and is sure it is the one she missed. William Hann of Shefford, police officer – he went to Wagstaffe’s house with Alice Cawcutt and charged Wagstaffe with having the gown. She denied having it and ran upstairs. He followed her and found the gown now produced among the straw in the bed.
