The average number of prisoners during the years ending respectively 29th September 1873 and 29th September 1874 were respectively 57 and 129 and the average weekly cost of each prisoner £1.0.9 3/4 and 11s 8d. The augmentation in number in 1873 is attributable entirely to increased numbers of military prisoners. John Smith has resigned his situation as warder; the Visiting justices have provisionally appointed William Musgrove in his place. During the absence of Mr Couchman the surgeon on account of illness Mr Johnson is acting for him with the sanction of the Visiting Justices.
