- Scope and ContentAlice Pettifer: wife of Thomas keeper of a beer shop in Meppershall. On 6 October Amos Rawlins came in and called for a pint of beer. He gave her half a crown in payment and she have him 2 shillings and 4 pence change. Rawlins drank the beer and went away. About half an hour later she heard a man resembling him had been passing bad half crowns about the village. She examined the one she had and found it light and bad. She had taken no other half crown that day. She immediately went to Shefford and gave the information to PC Pepper and delivered him the half crown. PC Reuben Pepper: on 6 October he received information from Mrs Pettifer that she had received a bad half crown and went with her into a beer shop in Shefford. There they found the prisoner, Rawlins, who Mrs Pettifer identified. He took Rawlins into custody but Rawlins said he knew nothing about it. Mrs Pettifer gave him the half crown. He found 9 shillings and a farthing on Rawlins. Statement of the accused: he gave her good money.
