- Scope and ContentEliza Cooper: she lived with her husband Abraham at Lower Stondon, next door to James Angel, who kept the Three Horseshoes public house. She would help in the house as Angel and his wife were old people. On 6 October the 2 prisoners came into the Horse Shoes. They called for a pint of beer and paid for it in coppers. They called for another and Amos Rawlins gave her a half crown and she gave him change. She put the half crown in a box and there was no other half crown in there. A couple of hours later she heard men resembling the prisoners had been passing bad money. She examined the half crown and found it to be a bad one. PC Pepper came and she delivered the half crown to him. The prisoners came in together and drank together. PC Reuben Pepper: on 6 October he went to Mrs Cooper and was given the half crown. Statement of the accused: William Johnson – nothing to say. Amos Rawlins – nothing to say.
