- Scope and ContentNumber of prisoners in custody 28 December 1872 = 40 On the corresponding day last year there were 63. The number of committals during the quarter have been males 82, females 18, total 100 being a decrease of 17 as compared with last year and of 75 as compared with the quarter ending Epipphany 1871. Of the 100 persons committed 65 were residents and 35 non residents of the County. 2 could read and write well, 40 imperfectly, 19 could read only and 39 could neither read or write. 18 had been in this prison once before, 8 twice, 7 thrice and 9 four times upwards. Thomas Wilkinson, Henry Roberts, William Collins, George Day and John Wooding were removed to Pentonville Convict Depot on the 8th November by order of the Secretary of State. Edward Wharton and Alfred Gudgin have been removed to the Beds Reformatory. Petition for increase in pay by prison officers granted.
