- Scope and ContentThomas Miles of Flamstead (Herts), woodman – he is foreman to Messrs Langton who are timber merchants in London and who have purchased the timber in Luton Park from Mr Warde. The 2 pieces of beech wood now produced are Messrs Langton’s property. Both of them are marked with red chalk which is his mark for wood belonging to Messrs Langton. One of them has a mark on it made by him with a knife. The woodmen are not allowed to sell pieces over 2 feet in length. William Yarrow of Luton, carter – about 6 weeks ago William Beer and George Peacock were lodging at his house. They are sawyers and were working in Luton Park. They asked if he would buy a load of chips and he agreed. He went with his cart to the park and got a load. They asked for half a crown and a pot of beer. They settled on the Saturday night. He went four times and fetched wood for the same price each time. The pieces now produced are pieces they sold him. Charles Maffey of Luton, police constable – from information he received he went to Yarrow’s house on Friday 21 may and saw a quantity of timber which he believed to be Messrs Langton’s property. He found the 2 pieces now produced by them with several other pieces about 2 feet in length. He fetched Miles the foreman who identified the 2 pieces as Messrs Langton’s property.
