Number of prisoners in the year ending 29th September 1871 522 against 627 in the year ending 29th September 1870. Average number of prisoners in custody 134 [151 in 1870]. The amount of prisoners earnings has considerably increased notwithstanding the diminution in numbers of prisoners. The termination on the 25th instant of the contract for the maintenance of prisoners from the COunt yof Middlesex pursuant to the Notice given by the Justices of that County will be a severe loss. The Visiting Justices are sorry to report that during the past year it has been necessary to remove three prisoners to Fisherton Lunatic Asylum, and that there is now in the prison another lunatic awaiting removal; of these one had escaped from a lunatic asylum, another was found insane in entering the prison, and the mother of a third is not in the Asylum at Arlesey.
