    Number of prisoners in custody 24th June 1871 = 139 Committals during the Quarter = 102 males 14 females = 116 Of the 116 committals 75 were resident and 41 non-residents of the County. 49 could read and write imperfectly, 26 read only and 341could neither read or write. On 27th May last Ann Fletcher under sentence of penal servitude was removed to the Convict Prison, Millbank, by Order of the Secretary of State. During the Quarter Eliza Daniels has been removed to the Mount Vernon Green Reformatory, Liverpool, and John Pack to the reformatory in this County. Solomon Harris, a County prisoner under sentence, was found to be insane and was removed to the Fisherton Lunatic Asylum by order of the Secretary of State. Jacob Grey convicted at the last Lent Assizes received a remission of sentence on medical grounds, and was discharged out of custody on the 28th April last. I have been informed that he is dead. On 16th May last Frederick Ireland (a prisoner awaiting trial at these Sessions) was reported by the Medical Officer to be of unsound mind. He has since been removed to Fisherton Lunatic Asylum by order of the Secretary of State. John Burr, a County prisoner, died on 21st May last. A Coroner's inquest was held on the body, Verdict: Death from natural causes. The body was removed from the prison for interment by the friends of the deceased. Thirteen Middlesex prisoners have been discharged since the last sessions. Henry Foster, late engineer to the prison, to whom superannuation allowance was granted at the last Quarter Sessions, died on the 20th April last. On 25th April I paid over to the County Treasurer £200 as profits on the earnings of prisoner slabour. H Briscoe esq, Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons, visited the prison on the 30th ulto. He saw every prisoner in his cell from whom there were no complaints. He also visited every part of the prison andexpressed himself highly pleased with his visit. Numbers of vagrants very much lower than previously.
