John Basterfield of Stagsden, labourer – he works for Mrs Swannell. Yesterday (30 April) he was working in a field in Stagsden. He left a bag containing bread and meat and a knife covered with his clothes near the hedge in the field where he was working. He saw Davies go and take the bag from under his clothes. Davies ran away. He followed him. He saw Davies drop the bag which he now produces with the victuals and knife in it. He asked Davies what he did it for but Davies did not answer. John Davies – Basterfield ran after him with a hoe in his hand. When he got up to his [Basterfield’s] master his master said “you give him a good thump, if you don’t I will”. He put the bag and victuals on the ground and hit him twice on the back.
