- Scope and ContentJohn Bigg of Luton, iron founder – on Tuesday 20 April he went to his iron foundry about 4pm. One of his men, Thomas Bostin, told him his son Thomas Bigg had been and taken 3 sets of iron pump works away. He went to Samuel Brett’s sale room with PC Maffey. Maffey brought him the iron pump works now produced which he swears are those he lost. His son has no concern in his business and has had a notice from him not to come upon the premises. Thomas Bostin of Luton, iron founder – he works at John Bigg’s foundry. Thomas Bigg came and showed him 2 pump handles. Thomas Bigg said he was going to take them away and they might tell old Bigg if they liked. He sent for John Bigg who sent for the policeman. Charles Maffey of Luton, police constable – he was sent for to Mr Bigg’s foundry. From information received he went to Samuel Brett's and found the pump handles now produced which John Bigg identified as his property. Samuel Brett of Luton, auctioneer – on Tuesday 20 April Thomas Bigg was at his house. Two persons came and spoke to him about a pump handle. He said he thought they had one at their foundry. Bigg left and returned soon afterwards with 2 pump handles. They did not suit and Bigg went and fetched another. Bigg later said he was not going to the foundry again and asked if he could leave them in his house. They were put into a back place. Maffey the policeman later came and fetched them away.
