- Scope and ContentNumber of prisoners in custody 25 June 1870 = 140. Number committed during last quarter - males 131, females 16, total 147, being a decrease of 40 upon the corresponding quarter of last year. 32 committals for vagrancy this quarter compared to 32 in the same quarter in 1869. Middlesex prisoners: 29 received and ten discharged. One (WH) being charged with insubordination, the case was brought before the Visiting Justices and dealt with accordingly. Harry Huke discharged May 28 last on medical grounds. Her Majesty's Prison inspector (Sir R Briscoe, Baronet) paid his first official visit to this prison on the 16th instant, and expressed himself as highly satisfied and pleased with the internal arrangements and discipline of the prison. I have to report the sudden death of the late Chirf Warder John paton Hillhouse, which occurred on Sunday, 24th April. He had been in the service of the prison for upwards of 20 years and it is due to his memory to state that he was a most courteous, conscientious and deserving officer, and very zealously devoted to his duties. I sincerely regret his loss and the County is deprisved of a truly faithful servant. He ahs left a widow in very difficult health, and four children to deplore his loss. Principal Warder Maile has since discharged the duties in a satisfactory manner. On 8th may Edwin Denton was removed to Beds Reformatory.
