    5 April 1870
  • Production date
    From: 1870 To: 1870
  • Scope and Content
Number of prisoners in custody 2 April 1870 = 131. Number committed during last quarter - males 143, females 11, total 154, being a decrease of 121 upon the corresponding quarter of last year. Twelve months have now elapsed since the attention of the Court was specially called to the great increase of vagrancy throughout the County and it is with some degree of satisfaction that I venture again to invite the attention of the Court to the subject in as much as there has been a large decrease in the number of vagrants sent to prison during the last quarter as compared with the corresponding quarter of 1869. For the quarter ending Easter Sessions 1869 there were 109 being more than one third of the committals. For the quarter ending April sessions 1870 there have been only 13 committals for vagrancy. On 18th January last Mary Eddy, under sentence of penal servitude, was removed to Millbank Convict depot by order of the Secretary of State. William Houghton and Robert Watkins have been removed to the Beds Reformatory...and Caleb Jackson to the Woodbury Hill Reformatory near Worcester. 48 Middlesex prisoners discharged and 31 received.
