  • Scope and Content
Having taken into consideration the salaries of Governors of other prisons, the length of service of the present governor of this prison and the results of his management they are of the opinion that an increase of £50 should be made to his salary. They recommend the appointmemnt of an additional warder for the following reasons: the Surgeon of the prison reports as follows: 'Much inconvenience frequently having arisen from the Infirmary Ward Patients being left in charge of other prisoners, I beg to suggest that in future a nurse should be provided to attend to them.' In enforcing hard labour the wardens are of necessity withdrawn from the interior of the prison six hours daily, exposed to all weathers with little or no relaxation. The staff on the male side numbers 15, the same as in the year 1856 when the average number of prisoners was 110,...at the present time the daily average is 159. The average number of male officers to each prison is 21 2/3. Visiting Justices hva e...called attention to the deficiency in the supply of water to the prison: they propose to have a pipe in connection with the town main; the estimated cost is £50.
