  • Scope and Content
Most of these deeds and papers connect very closely with the papers of the Wynne family [WY 1-1030], and the two catalogues should be used together. They also link to other papers from Tempsford [BS 650-684] and the papers of the Doyne Ditmas family of Wootton [D 1-300]. The Payne family was also connected to the Monoux family of Sandy. The Monoux family were connected with Wootton from 1514, and with Sandy from the early 18th Century. The Payne family came to Bedfordshire from the West Indies and settled at Roxton and later at Tempsford in the 18th Century. The two families were connected by marriage - John Payne married Mary Monoux in 1792. On the death in 1809 of Sir Philip Monoux, his property descended to his sisters, Mary (Payne) inheriting the manor of Wootton. She was then a widow, and she appears to have resided at Wootton probably from this time and certainly after her second marriage with J F Buckworth in 1811. On her death in 1850, Wootton was inherited by her son by her first marriage, Sir Charles Payne. The Payne Tempsford estates were sold in 1826, and Wootton became the seat of that family. This accounts for the Doyne Ditmas papers being a section of the Payne family papers, the bulk of which is in WY and BS 1276-1541.
