- Scope and ContentEdward Gooch of Eaton Socon, brewer – he is in the employ of Mr Thomas Bowyer. Yesterday (30 Sept) about 3.30pm he left £7 10s in his desk in the office. There were 6 sovereigns, one half sovereign and 20 shillings in silver. He put it in a box in his desk and locked the desk. The box was not locked. He stayed in the office until 4.30. No one else came in during that time. He left and went to the Sun public house, taking the key with him. He did not lock the office door. He was in the Sun about ¼ hour. When he returned he found the desk broken open and the money gone from the box. When he went to the Sun he saw Medlow there. He [Gooch] called for a bottle of ginger beer and on turning his back Medlow was gone. Medlow returned in about ¼ hour and said “there’s Jack Barker in the brewery. You had better go and see that he does not take anything”. Medlow then went away and he went back to the office and missed the money. He went to Medlow’s house about 200 yards from the office. Medlow saw him coming and ran towards his sister. Medlow appeared to give her something. Medlow came out of the house and asked “what’s the matter Ned? Have you lost any money?” He said Medlow knew what he wanted him for and sent for the policeman. The desk appeared to have been wrenched open with a bung drawer. [Further deposition] £4 10s of the money belonged to Mr Bowyer and £3 to himself. John Barker of Eaton Socon, labourer – yesterday he was doing Joe Coles work for him in Mr Bowyer’s yard. He was in the brewery at about 4.30pm. Medlow came up, had some beer and went down directly. Medlow came up again in about 10 minutes and had another horn of beer and left. The only way to get to the brewery is up the yard where the office is. John Medlow – yesterday about 3pm he went down to the brewhouse. Gooch sat there. They had some beer in the house. Some young men were there playing bowls. They had two games at bowls. Gooch went into the house for some time. After that they went in. His mother was in the house. He said he was going home to tea. He had not been at home more than 5 minutes when Gooch came and said he wanted him. He asked Gooch what for. Gooch said “you know”. When they got about half way towards Mr Coles (the Sun) Gooch accused him of having his money. He denied it. He did not know that Gooch kept money in the counting house. They sent for the policeman, searched him, and found nothing on him. He knows he is innocent.
