  • Scope and Content
William Marriott of Eaton Socon, farmer – sometime last May as a consequence of what he ws told by his brothers Charles and Ambrose Marriott he missed 3 ducks from his farm at Goodrich in the parish of Eaton Socon. They were swimming down the brook about a furlong from his house. The next day he saw his brother Ambrose bring the same 3 ducks back. They were then dead. They were delivered to the policeman either that afternoon or the following morning. Charles Marriott of Eaton Socon – he lives with his father. Sometime in the spring he saw three men walking by the brook near his father’s house. Newman was one of them. It was between 5 and 6pm. He saw the drake and one of the ducks come up from the book. The other two men were following the ducks, but not Newman. He went to the brook and the men went away. There were 5 ducks and a drake altogether. He missed three of the ducks. He has looked at the wings produced by the policeman. He believes they are the wings of some of his brother’s ducks. Ambrose Marriott of Eaton Socon – he lives with his brother William. Last April or May he saw Newman with the other men come to his brother’s house at about 4 or 5pm and go down by the side of the brook which goes down the middle of the premises. About 5 minutes later he followed them. They ran away. He caught up all three of the men when they got to Eaton. The next morning he went along the track the men had been the previous night. He saw 3 ducks lying in the dyke close by the track. He took the ducks home. He is sure they were his brother’s ducks. The name of one of the men who ran away was Markham. He believers the other’s name was Oakley. William Nicoll, no.2 of Beds Rural Police – from information he received from Wiliam Marriott he apprehended Newman and charged him with stealing the ducks. Newman said he did not take the ducks, that Ted Markham killed them and put them in his pocket. The wings now produced were cut off the ducks by William Marriott and marked in his presence and have been in his possession ever since. William Newman of Eaton Socon, labourer – he was at a distance from Markham and Oakley when they killed the ducks. He never touched them.
