  • Scope and Content
Eliza Lummis: on 22 October she was in Mr Shrosbery’s shop in Potton and bought some things which she left in the shop intending to call for later. She also left on the counter, by accident, a plush bag that she carried in her hand. She came later for her things and missed her bag. Mr Shrosberry came to the shop and she told him she had missed her bag. He went out into the street and returned after about half an hour with her bag. She had it about half a year and knew it well. James Shrosbery: Mrs Lummis told him she had lost her bag. He went to the house of Thomas Kefford and saw his wife Mary. He told her he came under painful circumstance and desired her to give back what she had taken from the shop. At first Mary Kefford pretended not to know what he meant but afterward she showed the bag. He told her he could not think what had possessed her to take it. Kefford said she should have returned the bag to the shop and she was very sorry for what she had done. She could not think what induced her. Statement of the accused: she hoped Mrs Lummis and Mr Shrosbery would be kind to her.
