  • Scope and Content
George Adams of Luton – on Saturday 13 June between 11 and 12 at night he was sitting on the pavement in Church Street when John Warner and Edward Wilson came up to him. Warner asked if he had been at work. He said he had worked 5 days for Mr Williams who had given him 3 shillings. He showed Warner the money. Warner and Wilson each laid hold of one of his arms ans pulled him along until they got him opposite John Waller’s gate near the bridge on the Hitchin Road. He felt Warner put his hand into his pocket. He felt in his pocket and found that his money, two buttons and half a yard of string were gone. He asked Warner to give him back his money several times. The only beer he had was what his master gave him. James Tawyer of Luton – he saw George Adams in Church Street with Warner and Wilson. He saw Adams pull something out of his pocket and say “there’s my money”. He followed them down Church Street. At the corner of the street he heard Adams say “Warner you have just put your hand into my pocket and pulled my money out”. Warner said he had not. Adams insisted Warner had. They had a hay home that night. They left work at 9pm then did up their horses and began the hay home. Adams was not sober. Warner had hold of one arm and Wilson the other. Esther Adams of Luton – she went down the Hitchin Road after her son George Adams. A little below the end of Burr Street she found him standing with Wilson and Warner. There were a great many people around. She heard her son ask Warner for his money. Warner said he had not got it and showed her a half crown and some half pence and asked if that was hers. She said she did not know but hoped if he had it he would give it to her. She followed Warner and Wilson and when they were at the corner of Wiseman’s house she heard Warner said to Wilson “Ned don’t you ever say a word”. Wilson said “no I’ll be buggered if ever I split”. Her son was not sober.
