Thomas Jackson of Whipsnade, woodman – on 29 November 1845 about 3pm he was watching the wood in Deadmondsey Wood in Whipsnade when he saw Kempson go to a quantity of beech trees belonging to William Henry Austin. Kempson chopped off a large piece of wood about 8 feet long with an axe. He saw Kempson take it out of the wood on his shoulder. The number of the tree as marked was 875. William Henry Austin of Studham – he bought a lot of timber at the sale in Deadmansey Wood on 11 November 1845. It was ten beech trees numbered from 871 to 880. On 29 November there were still some left in the wood. If his men had taken the piece off it would have been sawn not chopped.
