  • Scope and Content
George Barker of Steeple Morden (Cambs) – he was for some years in the service of Messrs Goodgames and Shrosbury at Potton in their business as drapers. He is now in business for himself at Morden. In consequence of Mr Shrosbury being obliged to send out his young men he came over to Potton yesterday morning (Mar 26) to assist in the shop. In the afternoon Davis came into the shop. He was serving other customers at the time. Davis stood a few minutes then said he would call again. Soon after Davis left he missed a satin scarf from the counter. In about ¼ hour Davis came back. He watched him narrowly and saw him take a plaid woollen scarf and tuck it into his inside coat pocket. He saw part hanging down below Davis’ coat. When he was free he served Davis with a hat and two caps. Davis left the shop. He followed him, charged him with the theft and took him into custody. He found the woolen scarf on him. He then gave him in charge to PC John Shaw. The satin scarf produced is the one he saw Davis take. James Shrosbery of Potton – he is in business as a draper with John Hipwell Goodgames. He was unwell yesterday and unable to attend to the business. The goods produced are the property of their firm with their marks on them. He has seen Davis in the shop before. Davis travels the country cleaning and dressing hats. The silk scarf is worth 7s 6d and the other 1s 9d. There are some gloves he thinks belong to them, but he is not sure. John Shaw of Potton – he is a police constable and was called to take Davis into custody. He searched Davis and found the gloves produced. On searching Davis’ lodgings he found the satin scarf, also 3 hats and sundry other goods. George Davis of Potton – he acknowledges he took the goods. He had had a little beer.
