  • Scope and Content
    John Mills: resided in Union Street, St Pauls, Bedford. On 29 Febraury he locked some tools up in a tool shop in Oakley. The next morning he found the lock sprung and the tools n the ground. He missed a jack plane, a hand plane, a poke shave and an augur. Thomas Paybody: the prisoner was trying to sell the tools on 1 March. At that time he saw the long plane and an augur. A person named Samuel Fountain came up and the prisoner produced another plane. Fountain bought the 2 planes and auger for 9 pence. Paybody gave 3 pence for the spoke shave. He went into a public house with the prisoner. The prisoner said Paybody wanted to know too much. The following day he gave the spoke shave to Mr Graham. Samuel Fountain: on 1 March he bought 2 planes and an augur, giving a shilling for them. He gave the tools to Mr Graham. Superintendent William Byers Graham: on 2 March he received 2 planes and an augur from Fountain. He found the spoke shave in Thomas Paybody’s barn. On 5 March he apprehended the prisoner at Wellingborough and told him the charge. John Mills: identified the tools. The prisoner had worked for him the previous November.
