Admin/biog history
The Health Committee was set up in 1947 in conformity with the National Health Service Act, 1946. Before 1947 some of the committee's functions had been under the old General Purposes Committee, the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee, and the Care of the Mentally Defective Committee. The Health Committee ceased in 1974, when the separate National Health Service was set up.
The Health Committee's functions as in the Yearbook 1949/50 and 1965/6, with sub-committees at various dates are as follow:

1. To be the Health Committee required to be appointed by the Council under Paragraph I of Part II of the Fourth Schedule of the National Health Service Act, 1946.
2. To exercise and perform all the powers and duties of the Council under:
i) The National Health Service Act, 1946
ii) Parts V and VI of the Public Health Act, 1936, and so much of Part VII thereof as relates to the notifications of Births.
iii) The Midwives Acts, 1902 to 1936.
iv) The Mental Deficiency Acts, 1913 to 1938, provided that any liability incurred under paragraph (e) of Section 30 thereof shall not exceed such sum as the Council may from time to time authorise.
v) The Lunacy and Mental Treatment Acts 1890 to 1930.
vi) The Nurses Acts, 1943 and 1945.
vii) Section 32 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930, in relation to Public Health.
viii) The Nurseries and Child Minders Regulations Act, 1948.
ix) The Food Drugs Act, 1938 and 1944, provided that the Committee shall have powers to delegate to a Milk Special Designation Sub Committee the powers under Part II of the Act of 1938 or any Order made thereunder.
x) The Merchandise Marks Act, 1926.
3. To advise the Council on all matters under their control in relation to Public Health, Pollution of Rivers, and Sale of Food and Drugs.
