    George Guest: on 9 October, at about 5pm, he was at the Bear public house in Biggleswade where he lodged. He took his coat and laid it on the settle in the tap room. He saw his coat saw safe at 9pm. James Kilby was in the tap room and some time after he went away. The next morning he missed the coat and he had not seen it again until produced by the policeman. William Watts: he had been in the Bear public house on 9 October. The prisoner was there at the same time. When he went in he saw the coat on the settle. About 9.30pm the prisoner took up the coat, folded it and put it under his arm. The prisoner walked out with it. Statement of the accused: he took the coat off the settle. He thought it was Mr Pateman’s and he was going to ride home with him. When he got home I told my wife to give it to him.
