  • Scope and Content
Rebecca Vintner: resided in Ireland in the parish of Southill. On 21 September she went to Deadman’s Cross Statute Fair at about 7pm. As she was coming out of the public house there, she felt somebody’s hand in her pocket. She turned and seized the prisoner who had his hand in her pocket. The prisoner snatched away from her and ran off. She saw him say something to a man close by, in whose hand she immediately saw her purse. She again seized the prisoner and took him into the public house. She kept him there until the policeman came. The other man ran away. She had had her purse out to pay for something and had returned it safe to her pocket about a minute before she felt the prisoner’s hand. The purse contained sovereign and 2 florins. A shilling and 5 halfpence. PC George Prior: on 21 September the prisoner who said his name was George Cutts was given into his custody on the charge of picking her pocket. He kept hold of the prisoner all night and took him in the morning to Biggleswade. As he was putting the prisoner in the lock-up, the prisoner said not to lock him up there but to let him go and he would make it up with the girl. Statement of the accused: he would never offend to do such a thing. He had not spoken to the policeman of it and was innocent.
