  • Scope and Content
Alfred Brocket: on 6 August the prisoner asked him to lend him a knife. Swales wanted to know what he would take for it and he replied half a crown. Swales said he would give him 18 pence if he would give him 3 pence. Swales asked him if he thought he would have it anymore and Brocket replied yes. Swales said he should have it, shut up the knife and went to the gate post. Swales said he left the knife there but Brocket could not find it upon looking. Before he had lent the knife to Swales he had said he would not lend it as he was sure Swales would keep it. Swales said he would not. PC Ephraim Aldridge: he went in pursuit of the prisoner on 6 August. He traced him to Brayfield, 5 miles from Bromham. He found him in a straw rick at about 3am. He searched him and found the knife. On telling him the charge, Swales said he had the knife 12 months. On taking him into custody, Swales said he had the knife from a boy on the road. Swales said he had asked to borrow it to cut his shoes.
