The dish produced by PC Millard is the same dish. Lucy Barnes of Luton – she was ordered by her mistress to take a dinner to Mrs Waters' bakehouse. The dish produced is the same dish she took. Charles Cain of Luton, baker - about 12.30pm on Dec 19 Smith came to his mistress’s bakehouse and said she had come for her dinner. He asked what it was. She said mutton and pudding. He looked in the oven and said there was only a piece of beef. She said that was it and asked if the baking was a penny or three halfpence. He said one penny. She paid him and took it away. Hearing information he went with PC John Millard to a lodging house in New Town Street and saw Smith sitting by the fire. Millard found the dish with beef, potatoes and pudding on a shelf in the room. John Millard of Luton, police constable – he went to the lodging house with Charles Cain and saw Smith sitting by the fire. Cain said it was the girl who fetched the dinner from the bakehouse. He found the dish of food on a shelf in the same room.
