- Scope and ContentJane Page of Leighton Buzzard, singlewoman – she is housekeeper to Mr Edgar Olley, a surgeon and apothecary. Hornsby came into the yard on Tuesday 25 November between 2 and 3pm. She saw him stand a minute or two and go into the gig house. He came out again with the great coat under his arm. It is her master’s property and is worn by his man servant. She went out and told Hornsby to put it back again, which he did. She asked what he was going to do with it. He said he was going to take it away. She said something more and he swore at her and said he would take her too. Hornsby left. Joseph Smith came in. She told him and he went after Hornsby. Joseph Smith of Leighton Buzzard, labourer – he went after Hornsby and brought him back to the house. Page identified him. Hornsby got away from him and he gave information to Forth the constable. He wears the great coat when he goes out with Mr Olley in the night. John Chapman of Leighton Buzzard, parish constable – he produces the great coat which he received on Tuesday from Joseph Smith John Hornsby – makes no answer to the charge.
