- Scope and ContentThomas Barcock of Shefford, chimney sweeper – he employed Matthews until last Monday week. Matthews lives next door to him. Last Friday morning he missed about 30 iron hurdle shackles from a barn. The three shackles produced are some of those he lost. Emma Hillyard, wife of George Hillyard of Southill – last Friday night Matthews brought 10 iron hurdle shackles to her house and asked if her husband wanted to buy any. She said she could not say as her husband was not at home. Matthews left the shackles under the table and said if her husband wanted them he could have them for fourpence. George Hillyard of Southill, hurdle maker – last Saturday night he saw Matthews at the White Hart tap at Shefford. Matthews asked him for the money for the shackles he left. He refused to give it to Matthews as he suspected they were stolen.
