Depositions and examination Charles Norman charged with stealing one lath hammer, one trowel and one rule from John Hilton at Upper Caldecott in the parish of Northill

John Hilton of Pavenham, bricklayer – he is a bricklayer and has been working for some time at Biggleswade. Last Monday 25 August he lent a lath hammer, a trowel and a rule to Norman, who he knew was working for Mr Richardson. He has not seen the tools since. Loftus Richardson of Biggleswade, bricklayer – after he had charged Norman with having stolen his tools and had locked the door Norman told him he might have the tools which were in his lap. They were a lath hammer, a trowel and some other tools. Norman said “these are mine, they are my tools and will you take them and let us go”. Charles Norman – “Hilton lent me the tools”.
