  • Scope and Content
George Norrish of Weedon (Northants), bookseller – he is in the habit of coming to Bedford with books for sale. Lansbury has been in his service about 18 months. It was Lansbury’s duty to deliver books to people who had ordered them, and he was authorized to receive money on his account. On 17 June he came to Bedford with Lansbury. He delivered books valued £5 12s to Lansbury with orders to take them to various persons. He did not see Lansbury again until 5 August, when he asked for the money for the books. On 17 June he received 4s worth of books from Lansbury as he wished to deliver them himself. He has received no money or other books from Lansbury. The books now produced (numbers of Dugdale’s England and Wales) is priced at 6d. [Cross examined] Lansbury was engaged to deliver books for 5s a week plus travelling expenses. Hillyard Nichols of St Paul Bedford, corn factor – he has bought books from Norrish for over ha year. Norrish brought the books himself until about 6 weeks ago. About a fortnight ago Lansbury brought him the books now produced (numbers of Dugdale’s England and Wales). He paid Lansbury a shilling for them. Lansbury told him he had received them from Norrish. Lansbury had once brought other books, he supposed on account of Norrish, for which he paid him. Charles Hinton Hall of St Paul Bedford, schoolmaster – about a fortnight ago Lansbury called at his house and left the double numbers of Fleetwood’s Life of Christ. He did not pay him for them. Lansbury acknowledged to him that he had received the money for them (1 shilling). He did not know on whose account Lansbury brought the books. 7 August ------------ Elizabeth Jelly, wife of Henry Jelly of St Paul Bedford, tin plate worker – Lansbury has brought books to her husband’s house on Norrish’s account, for which she has paid him. About a fortnight ago Lansbury brought two books (2 numbers of Fleetwood’s Life of Christ). There was a mistake about the books – Lansbury called in the middle of the day, then again in the evening and left the books. She did not pay him. Norrish has also called at her house with books. Adelaide Jelly, daughter of Henry Jelly – she remembers Lansbury calling at her father’s on 23 July. He delivered the two books into her hands (nos.21, 22, 23 and 24 of the Life of Christ) and she paid him a shilling. John Redman of St John Bedford, butcher – he knows both Lansbury and Norrish. They have beein in the habit of bringing books to his house. A fortnight ago Lansbury delivered the books produced (nos.31, 32, 33 and 34 of the Life of Christ). Lansbury said his master had been very ill. He paid Lansbury 1 shilling. James Crawley of St Paul Bedford, butcher – about a fortnight ago Lansbury called at his house with the books produced (nos.29, 30, 35, 36, 37 and 39 of Dugdale’s England and Wales). He paid him 1s 6d for the books. The number 39 is marked 38 on the outside. George Norrish – he has looked at the book no.23 & 24 produced by Adelaide Jelly and is positive it was among those he delivered to Lansbury on 17 June. Lansbury has never paid him any money for it. He has also looked at No 39 of Dugdale’s England and Wales and that was also with the same parcel. On 17 June he told Lansbury to meet him at Northampton on 21 June to pay him what he had received for the books and return those unsold. He has received nothing from him. He asked Lansbury for the price of the books on 5 August and he did not reply. Lansbury stated in Mr Coomb’s house that he had been ill and had written to him several times. John Lansbury – about 12 months ago Norrish sent him from Higham Ferrars to Wellingborough, which was the first time he did any work for him. Norrish sent him out about Christmas delivering for him and it went on from that time until now. He was never engaged as his servant. The only engagement he made was with Messrs John and [F…] Tallis. Norrish has borrowed him from their service.
