- Scope and ContentMancell Green: he resided at Clapham and was a labourer. On 17 June, John Felts came past him whilst he was at work at Sharnbrook and asked if he should bring his shovel to him. Green replied yes. He had been working with Felts for about a fortnight at Souldrop. He did not see Felts again until a week ago and asked if he knew anything about the shovel. Felts said the master would not let him take it away and the man he had lent it to had drawn 2 shillings on it. Green had lent the shovel to James Gilbert a month ago. He saw his shovel at Mr Freeman’s house on Wednesday. William Freeman: on 18 June Felts was in the Bedford Arms public house at Oakley. Felts said he had a shovel to sell as he didn’t want to carry it home. Felts said it was his own shovel. He had known Felts for years and believed he lived at Chelsea near Leighton Buzzard. He gave Felts 2 shillings for the shovel.
